The mysterious silence surrounding the fate of Karak Zorn could be due to war with the Lizardmen, since ancient records of Zlatlan refer to strife with Karak Zorn occurring in -2000 IC and little was heard of it since, but it could just as easily be due to war with the Undead of Nehekhara, who sealed off the route to Karak Zorn centuries ago. They may have even made contact as friends. Almost certainly, the Dwarfs would have been interested in the gold and riches of the city of Zlatlan, and fascinated by its stone architecture. Maybe the Dwarfs of Karak Zorn encountered the Lizardmen, if so it is not recorded in any known Dwarf sagas. Here the Dwarfs could flourish in a climate not unlike that of their better known homeland. If this is so, then the stronghold probably would have been situated high above the surrounding jungle among the snow-capped peaks. They reached the southern end of the mountains and built a stronghold, known in legend as Karak Zorn. It is said that thousands of years ago, Dwarfs journeyed along the mountain range which forms the spine of this vast continent. Some claim that the dwarfs that founded and lived in Karak Zorn had rebelled against Grungni's command to spread across the mountain ranges, others that they were besieged by a horrible enemy from the southern lands.

The reason the dawi left Karak Zorn is unclear. It is likely that this was the closest stronghold to the original homelands of the Dwarfs in the southern part of the Worlds Edge Mountains. Īccording to Dwarf legends the long lost stronghold of Karak Zorn lies in the far south of the Worlds Edge Mountains, deep in the heart of the Southlands. To date Karak Zorn remains a fable, but perhaps one day a haggard Dwarf explorer will solve what has remained the most perplexing mystery in all the Dwarf realms. Expeditions have never succeeded in finding the lost stronghold, but tales persist of explorers who find the place by accident but who never seem able to retrace their steps, describe their route, or provide any convincing proof to back up their wild stories. Sometimes gullible adventurers pay good money for such maps, much to the derision of hardened adventurers who know better. Maps circulate purporting to show the location of Karak Zorn, but most are wildly different and look distinctly conjectural.

Supposedly, the stronghold is surrounded by steaming jungles full of fearsome creatures and hostile Orcs. Rubies and diamonds are so common that they are used as minor units of currency instead of small coins. Its massive gates of ivory are bound with red copper. If tales are to be believed Karak Zorn is carved from a mountain of gold. Whether the stronghold exists, or even if it ever existed, is uncertain, but details of its fabulous treasures and the incredible wealth of its kings are often discussed over a few pints of Dwarf ale. It should make for some interesting campaign play.Karak Zorn, which means " Hold of the Upland Plateau" in Khazalid, is a legendary Dwarf Hold, built thousands of years ago at the extreme southern tip of the Worlds Edge Mountains. The Lizardmen are the main power, but other factions, from the first game and the second, have a presence here. Unlike Naggaroth, Ulthuan, or Lustria, the Southlands are not associated uniquely with any one faction. How will the second game treat this? It could be an impassably, misty area, like Athel Loren prior to the Wood Elf expansion. The lands of Araby and the lands of the dead both lie between the Southlands and the southern reach of the Badlands, currently the southern extent of the game map. The Southlands don’t connect directly to the Badlands. No doubt there are Skaven lairs here and there, if you believe in that sort of thing. Before that though you’ll find the town of Sudenburg, and Empire colony, and the lost Dwarf hold of Karak Zorn, separated long ago from their northern kin by the rise of Nehekhara.

Go any further north and you’ll enter the Land of the Dead, generally not a good idea. Going north the jungles give way to plains, and the plains to desert. These can be seen at the southern tip of the Southlands and also further east. To facilitate their global trade routes, fortresses provide a safe harbour for High Elf ships. The High Elf presence is more recent and more practical. Now separated by and ocean, the Lizardmen cities of the Southlands have become self-sufficient. The Southlands and Lustria were once once landmass so the stories say, until they were sundered by the Lizardmen in their desperate fight to hold back the forces of Chaos. However, looking at the map above there is a clear presence for the Lizardmen and for the High Elves. The area was never fully fleshed out in the game world to the extent that the Old World or Naggaroth were. The Southlands are very different to the other three lands in the forthcoming Total War: Warhammer 2.
